D-amino acid oxidase is a peroxisomal enzyme containing
flavin adenine dinucleotide as a cofactor that is expressed in wide range of
living species such as humans, yeasts etc. In bacteria and plants, they show a
varied form as D-amino acids dehydrogenase, which oxidizes to produce ammonia
and hydrogen peroxide. D-amino acids are compounds made from amine and
carboxylic acid functional groups. Amino acids contain carbon, hydrogen,
oxygen, and nitrogen.
They can be segmented as alpha, beta, gamma, or delta
based on their structure. Amino acids find application in nutritional
supplements, food, and fertilizers, as well as in the commercial sector for the
production of biodegradable plastics, drugs, animal feed supplements, and human
food. They can be used to manufacture a variety of polypeptides, and have very
few substitutes, which results in steady demand. Lysine and glutamic acid
represent the fastest growing amino acids segment; lysine is a critical
additive in animal feed production.
